The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
